Wolf Brewing Company is a little off the beaten path but well worth the treck. Located in the industrial area of south Nanaimo at #2 -940-Old Victoria rd. it is noted by a sign on the side of the Old Island Highway reading “tours”. Long time Brewer and pub Manager Kev Ward and his unbelievably gorgeous assistant brewer Megan Pohorecky sure know how how to brew a tasty beer. I am familiar with their usual line up but when I heard that they had gotten specialty yeast to brew this beautiful bastard of a beer, I had no doubts that they would knock it out of the park.
This 9.6 % ABV Belgian Tripel could pass for a 6%. Well balanced notes of biscuit and a slight banana are complimented by the warm and spicy malt character. It’s a smokey straw colour and left an intricate lacing as I drank. By the end of it I had a couple of rosy cheeks but I assure you, the level of alcohol in this baby is well hidden. I am not sure if it will stay this way as it ages or if the boozy character will be more apparent later but I have a feeling there will not be any left to taste soon anyway. As a seasonal for Wolf Brewing Co. it will not be available for long but they did bottle some for those of you outside of Nanaimo. Ask for it at finer liquor stores all over Vancouver Island.
